Where to go from Palermo airport
Falcone Borsellino International Airport is an ideal starting point for visiting western Sicily. Located on the main highway, the airport guarantees extreme ease in reaching
the most important tourist destinations of the island as well as connecting in just 30 minutes to the Sicilian capital, Palermo, which in itself deserves a separate chapter
for its vastness of artistic, cultural and landscape heritage.
Castellammare, Scopello and the Zingaro reserve
Once you land in Palermo with your rental car, you can visit the wonderful places of western Sicily that wind along the Palermo - Trapani motorway axis.
We suggest starting with a stop in Castellammare del Golfo, a splendid seaside town that owes its name to the ancient Norman fortification that faces
the port. From here you can proceed towards Scopello, a town made famous for its stacks in front of the ancient tonnara (tuna fishery), and for the wonderful
Zingaro nature reserve, now an area protected by the WWF. Do not miss a tour of the mediaeval village where you will taste the local speciality: freshly baked
"pane cunzato" and ricotta cassatelle.
San Vito Lo Capo
Continuing you will reach places of unparalleled beauty, crystal clear sea and kilometres of white beach characterise San Vito Lo Capo, a place famous
for its breathtaking beach and for being the home of Cous-Cous, a typical Arab dish that has become the emblem of the country with specially dedicated festivals.
Erice and Segesta
Travelling towards Trapani, and along the sea, you will meet Valderice, from here you can start the uphill road that will lead you to the magical mediaeval village of
Erice, unique in the international panorama, which owes its fame to its perfect conservation: a step back in the centuries among cobbled streets, Romanesque churches,
flowered patios and typical craft shops that will culminate with a visit to the Castle of Venus, the heart of this Trapani jewel. Also in the province of Trapani, you will
find the archaeological park of Segesta, with the iconic and majestic temple and the ancient theatre still active during the summer evenings.
Other destinations
You are close to the famous salt pans, you just have to deviate towards Marsala and point to the pier to enjoy a lake landscape with pink colours and
dotted with ancient windmills. You are one step away from the island of Mozia, a suggestive open-air museum of Greek excavations and findings to be reached
by boat. If you are a tourist with a passion for wine then you are in the right place, you must absolutely book a tasting in one of the many prestigious local wineries.
Anything else? Glimpses of authentic Sicily will make you fall in love with Menfi, Mazara del Vallo, Selinunte and, for the insatiable, ones you can go as far as Agrigento
to contemplate the Valley of the Temples and fully understand the ancient soul of this land.
