Routes and travel ideas
Lanciano, a jewel between sea and mountain
A small town in Abruzzo, Lanciano is a destination for international religious tourism thanks to the "Eucharistic miracle" renowned for being the oldest in Christianity but it is
also certainly a small treasure chest of historical and artistic treasures that make it a delightful mediaeval village of intact beauty and authenticity.
The city of the "Squilla" and the Eucharistic Miracle
Every 23rd December at 7 pm all the bell towers of the churches of Lanciano resonate at the same time and the population of the town travels 3 kilometres to the church of
the Iconicella. It is the Christmas rite of the Squilla in honour of an ancient tradition dating back to 1607 in honour of Bishop Paolo Tasso.
The whole city is deeply imbued with a religious tradition that pivots on the Church of Saint Francis where the relic of the Eucharistic Miracle
is kept. Under the watchful eyes of the faithful, this consecrated host transformed into the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ as proof of the truthfulness of the sacrament in the
seventh century.
Mediaeval architecture
Lanciano is far more than traditions and ancient customs. This small town of Abruzzo is a fine combination of mediaeval architecture that can be admired in all its beauty according
to the four main districts where the historic centre is divided.
Starting from Piazza del Plebiscito we set off from Lanciano Vecchia, a weave of small artisan workshops dotted with ancient churches and bell towers,
here is the Porta di San Biagio, the only mediaeval gateway to the city still intact while from the belvedere we can admire the Diocletian bridge,
erected by the homonymous emperor, and the Cathedral of Lanciano on which it rests entirely.
We continue to the village where we come across the already mentioned Church of Saint Francis famous for the Eucharistic miracle: from here we can go along the city
tunnels to discover an extraordinarily rich and fascinating archaeological path.
Through a long staircase, called one hundred steps, we arrive at the Civitanova district, so named for the fountain where the women went to wash their clothes.
Here you will find the beautiful Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with two large rose windows and the Gothic façade, the Montanare Towers and the
Diocesan Museum. We then reached the Sacca district, a web of narrow streets, ancient arcades and groups of colourful houses that liven up this part of the city.
Now the local cuisine awaits you, you will be spoiled for choice between inns and typical trattorias where you can enjoy the most genuine Abruzzo delicacies.
ZTL
In Lanciano, there is the ZTL, Limited Traffic Zone, which involves part of the city. In this area, you can use public transport or 100% electric cars. However, we suggest, as a
further precaution, inquiring about the latest updates directly on the municipal website.
