Routes and travel ideas
Capital of Sardinia, Cagliari will give you an authentic island experience making you discover the richness of this land where history, landscape, culture, art, traditions,
food and crafts come together composing a harmonious picture.
Cagliari city
Open to the sea, and sunny, bright, Cagliari welcomes the visitor with the grandeur of its castle, an imposing and white fortification perched on the highest
point of the city once frequented by nobles and wealthy. Following narrow streets and alleys, you will reach the Bastions and, before stopping in one of the
many delicious local bars and cafes of the place, we suggest a visit to the Elephant Tower and the Tower of San Pancrazio, both of the fourteenth
century, passing by the dazzling Cathedral of Santa Maria, historic symbol of the Cagliaritani, built in the thirteenth century and then to continue to
the Royal Palace, a sumptuous Aragonese residence and now hosting the Prefecture. The cobblestone streets will lead you to the Bastion of Saint Remy,
an imposing gate of the late nineteenth century that marks the passage from the higher part of Cagliari to the lower part of the city where you will be literally stunned
by the spectacular panorama of the Umberto I terrace. Now go down and get ready for a burst of colours and life: between narrow alleys and houses characterised by soft pink,
green and yellow colours, dive into the San Benedetto market, the largest in Europe, a real explosion of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish masterfully exposed
in an atmosphere full of energy and joy, the same that you can find in the typical district of the Marina, a district that illustrate the ancient artisan
traditions of Cagliari and, among the many shops in the area, you can taste the most authentic dishes of Sardinian cuisine, continue to the Villanova district
and here — between balconies and windows — you will come across the imaginative Via Saturnino, the mecca of street artists and murals. If you want to deepen the historical
aspects you can not miss the Archaeological Museum with its statues of the Giants of Mont'e Prama and the Roman amphitheatre perfectly
incorporated in the city. Do you want to finish on a high? Then no doubt, head to the beach of Poetto or Calamosca, the sea of the people
of Cagliari, and enjoy the beauty of this paradise within the city, where the pink flamingos often stop, maybe look at the horizon from the famous Devil's Saddle,
a legendary promontory as its name suggests.
Outside the city
The surroundings of Cagliari are a perfect mix of popular traditions, ancient rural landscapes and coasts of fine white sand. The trip, aboard your rental car, will show you
an ancient and proud land, as only the islanders know it to be. Here is Quartu Sant'Elena, a place where wonderful stretches of sea coast alternate with
natural landscapes and protected oasis, a little further on, Sant'Andrea will provide evidence of ancient settlements such as the Roman villa today lapped
by the sea. Continuing along the coast to Villasimius, a popular resort for summer tourism, you will come across countless beautiful bays, crystal clear water, soft sand
dunes will accompany you along the way. After the coast it is absolutely worth visiting the Sardinian hinterland rich in precious archaic testimonies such as the
Nuraghe Su Nuraxi di Barumini where you should not miss a visit to Casa Zapata, an Aragonese villa today a museum of extreme historical-artistic
interest. Also, inland is the imposing Castle of Acquafredda, perched on a mountain in Siliqua and built by Dante's Count Ugolino. Going to Sant'Antioco
you must visit Pula, a beautiful seaside resort renowned for the beauty and purity of its waters, but also for the richness of the
archaeological park of nearby Nora, full of treasures and precious finds in the open. Pass Chia and continue to the
nuragic village of Seruci, a vast territory that will give you a still vibrant example of social life in the Bronze Age. Among the many experiences to try,
you still have to try Sardinian cuisine... we do not feel like giving you any suggestions...wherever you go, it will be a surprising success!
Cagliari's ZTL
Cagliari, like many other Italian cities. has some city areas called ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone), these totally exclude vehicular traffic with the obvious
exception of residents. Access is therefore only pedestrian. There are also other areas of the city where access is possible only during specific
times. For information you can check the Municipality of Cagliari website. Also, when parking your car, we suggest checking the cost and time of
parking on the blue lines.
